    Emmy Nominations Reaction

Oh, you Emmy voters, how you toy with my emotions. As I've said before, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences giveth and taketh away. It's hard to be in a total uproar when "Arrested Development" received so much love and "Scrubs" and Zach Braff finally got called up to the big show. So, yes, I'm happy for Hugh Laurie and Jeremy Piven, positively thrilled for Terry O'Quinn and Naveen Andrews and delighted for "The 4400." My all time favorite reality series "Project Greenlight" was even nominated for outstanding reality program.

Thus concludes the positive part of my reaction. I feel at this point it is best to focus my anger and contain my wrath. (Please shout the next sentence to get the full effect.) I cannot believe The WB and UPN continue to be ignored. There are six major broadcast networks and the Emmy voters act like two of them don't even exist. Okay, I feel a little better now.

Sure I know it was a bit of a pipe dream to think that "Everwood" and "Veronica Mars" would be basking in Emmy glory, but I really thought this could be Lauren Graham's year. If she didn't break into the Emmy's clique this year, I don't know when she ever will. I could live with all the other injustices (Talk me through how "Six Feet Under" beat out both "Without a Trace" and "Rescue Me" for a drama slot. How is it possible that John C. McGinley genius continues to go unnoticed?) if I had heard Graham's name announced.

    Best News Ever

There are times when I believe the TV gods on Mt. Saint Spelling look down on me and think, "Hmmm ... the Emmy nominations seem to have depressed our Amy, let's try to cheer her up." And that's exactly what happened last Thursday when it was announced that my favorite, Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia on "Buffy" and "Angel" as if I had to tell you that) will join the cast of "Veronica Mars" next season for six episodes. She'll play Kendall Casablancas, the stepmother to Dick and Beaver Casablancas. How perfect is that?

For those of you keeping track, this means that most of the Scooby gang will be back on TV next season. Alyson Hannigan is in CBS's "How I Met Your Mother." David Boreanaz is the star of FOX's "Bones," Seth Green is in NBC's "Four Kings" and Nicholas Brendon is in FOX's "Kitchen Confidential." Now all we need is for Sarah Michelle Gellar to guest star on her husband's ABC show "Freddie" and for Anthony Stewart Head to pop up on "The O.C." as the new headmaster.

    Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Time for July 18 to 24

"Summerland" and its beautiful soul come to an end Monday at 9 p.m. on the WB. Will Ava and Johnny finally get together? I know you are in such suspense. It is such a challenge to figure out what might happen.

"Rescue Me" (Tuesday, FX, 10 p.m.) had some positively brilliant comic moments last week. The scene where they all called each other names was perfectly executed. The conversation about which celebrities could take another hilarious. So I don't understand the scene where the hot, tall, blonde veterinarian hits on the probie. That's simply a male fantasy come to life and the show is much better than that. Remember I'm only critical because I care. This week Tommy gets one step closer to getting his kids back.

Alas, I can't tell you much about "So You Think You Can Dance" (Wednesday, FOX, 8 p.m.) because FOX didn't send the episode for review. But it sounds to me like "American Idol" meets "Dancing with the Stars" -- how can it go wrong?

ABC Family takes viewers behind the scenes in "Venus & Serena: For Real" (Wednesday at 10 p.m.). I'm so happy that there's finally a reality show where celebrities don't embarrass themselves. The sisters are hard-working, devoted to their family, and savvy about their careers. This is a show to watch with your whole family.

Now that NBC is no longer must-see-TV, all the networks are on the attack Thursday night. "Smallville" flies into its new timeslot Thursday at 8 p.m. on the WB and "Everwood" finally returns the schedule at 9 p.m.

Serenity now. The Sci-Fi Channel begins airing "Firefly," the short-lived, but still beloved science fiction western from Joss Whedon, Friday at 7 p.m. The network will air all 14 episodes including three previously unaired episodes.

Michael Badalucco, Shiri Appleby, and Dan Hedeya star in "Pizza My Heart" on ABC Family Sunday at 7 p.m.

That's all for today. I'm off next Monday. I will be at the press tour in Los Angeles gathering all the television gossip I can about the upcoming season. Most shows return to their sets by the end of July so we should know a lot more very soon. Don't miss FX's fantastic "Over There" (July 27 at 10 p.m.) while I'm gone. I will return on Monday, Aug. 1 with a review of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List" (love it, love it, love it) and all the gossip fit to print.
